Open Call for Dancers & Performance Artists
W-I-P or Wednesday-in-Performance/Works-in-Progress is a long-running collaboration between Jump-Start Performance Co. and San Antonio Dance Umbrella. WIP provides a low-tech opportunity to receive feedback on movement-based work that is new or in progress. It is a innovative choreography development program created not only to facilitate the development of
new works by dance artists but also to establish a dialogue between the
dancer, choreographer, and audience. Artists are encouraged to present
new works and to take part in an affirming, facilitated discussion based
on choreographer Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process. WIP is held 7pm at the Jump Start Theater (108 Blue Star, San Antonio,
TX 78204) on the last Wednesday of the month beginning in September. If you are a dancer, choreographer or performance artist and would like
to show new work or work in progress now is the time to sign up for the
2009-10 upcoming season. Choose from the following season dates.
Remember, fist come-first serve; dates fill fast, so reserve yours asap. WIP Dates:
2009 (Sept 30th,
Oct 28th,
Nov 18th); 2010 (Jan 27th,
Feb 24th,
Mar 31st,
Apr 28,
June 23 [site specific]). Rules and Regulations: * There is no age limit for WIP, but the work must be the artist's own. * Artists may perform at a maximum of 2 WIP's as long as they are not consecutive performances. * Choreographers will be paid an honorarium for participation and will receive a video file of their performance. * Preference will be given to San Antonio artists, though out of town artists are welcome to apply * You must send in a PR picture representative of your work at the
time of your performance confirmation. * You must prepare and submit at least 2 questions for the audience (step 2 of CRP) the day before your WIP. Steps of the Critical Response Process: 1. Statements of Meaning: Responders state what was meaningful, evocative, interesting, exciting, striking in the work they have just witnessed. 2. Artist as Questioner: The artist asks questions about the work. After each question, the responders answer. Responders may express opinions if they are in direct response to the question asked and do not contain suggestions for changes. 3. Neutral Questions: Responders ask neutral questions about the work. The artist responds. Questions are neutral when they do not have an opinion couched in them. For example, if you are discussing the lighting of a scene, "Why was it so dark?" is not a neutral question. "What ideas guided your choices about lighting?" is. 4. Opinion Time: Responders state opinions, subject to permission from the artist. The usual form is "I have an opinion about ______, would you like to hear it?" The artist has the option to decline opinions for any reason. For more information & to apply, contact Amber Ortega-Perez, ortegaperez2002@yahoo.com.
