The mission statement of The Academy of Dance Arts is to nurture and motivate students to pursue excellence through dance training; to impart passion for the Art of Dance; and to promote our rich cultural Hispanic roots through dance movement and expression. In this unique establishment students will learn the physical outlines of dance, the spirit behind its tradition, and the rich heritage of where it derived! The Academy will assist you with the necessary rules of technique and the expressive style of each regional dance form. The Academy of Dance Arts main goal is to instill a sense of self-confidence through public performance and expose each student to fundamentals of dance, self-discipline, poise, grace, dexterity, dance language, rhythm, posture improvement, stage presence, choreography, unity, camaraderie, and gratification. The student will develop natural artistic abilities and learn to express their individual styles through the elements of music, song and dance including the mechanics of dance movement; theatrical expression; staging; costuming; etc., all of which result in a greater enjoyment of dance. The Academy of Dance Arts is presently under the direction of Micaela Garza-Rodriguez a native Texan born in San Antonio. Garza-Rodriguez and school administrator, business associate and dance instructor Rodolfo R. Medellín founded the dance academy in 1999. Mr. Medellin was born in Laredo, Texas and trained in theatrical dance at The University of Texas at Austin. They both envision expanding their expertise in dance by sharing their knowledge with the public. Micaela also serves as the artistic director of Flamenco Fuego de San Antonio, the professional resident dance company founded in 1995 and the performing troupe Clave Latina, founded in 2003. The dance company consists of talented performers who often entertain the public in official entertainment venues throughout Texas, as well as private venues. Micaela began training since early childhood, danced professionally in her teens and has trained with acclaimed flamenco masters such as Antonio Vargas, Antonio Granjero, Teo Morca, Jose Greco Sr., Pepe Greco, Nana Lorca, Luis Monitors, Jose Molina, Pablo Rodarte, Pilar Riojas, Maria Benitez. In addition she toured with international guitarist and comedian celebrity Charo in Hawaii. She was a vibrant member of the late Eduardo Montemayor’s Ballet Fantasia Español dance company that was privileged to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., for the Texas Festival, and the San Antonio Festival in 1990. To her credit and in testament of her artistic abilities, she led her children’s twirling team – “Michelle’s Southern Bell Baton Twirling & Dance Studio” into an award-winning academy throughout Texas for over 15 years. The Academy faculty consists of professional teachers who are fully qualified to provide training for toddlers of age 2 yrs. through adults and senior citizens. In addition to the dance curriculum, performing arts opportunities are encouraged to highlight the student development during their training. Performing in public venues is a privilege and the students have opportunities throughout the year to participate various official art festivals as well as non-official entertainment venues, and all to culminate with an annual dance production showcasing their accomplishments. However, a poor attendance record or disorderly conduct that affect other students may be cause for dismissal. Classes are kept small so that each student receives proper attention and achieve the most comprehensive structure of dance. The Academy reserves the right to judge which classes is capable of achieving. The Academy of Dance Arts is perfectly located in south central King William District, surrounded by the San Antonio River, historical homes, restaurants, art galleries, theaters and San Antonio’s amazing cultural events. It is definitely an alluring spot for arts training at the Blue Star Arts Complex across from the Pioneer Flour Mill.
