San Antonio was founded as a Texas non-profit corporation in June
of 1985 by Artistic Director Mayra Vega Worthen and ballerina Melissa
Hale.
Ballet San Antonio is a classically
trained ballet company that is devoted to creating and presenting
professional quality performances as it carries on the Ballet Russe
tradition of exuberance in performing. Under the artistic direction
of Mayra Worthen, dancers are trained in the Ballet Russe style (which
is unique to Ballet San Antonio and not currently taught else- where
in the city).
The company's first public performance was at Beethoven
Hall in May of 1986, followed by a performance at the Carver Community Cultural Center in
December of 1986. Subsequently, the company served as the resident ballet company of
The Carver until a continuously growing audience necessitated a move to a larger theatre.
The company has presented major performances
of 10 different programs, including original works by Hale, Worthen,
David Anderson, and Sheila Mello, among others. In addition,
performances of The Nutcracker, Coppelia, and Les Sylphides have been
staged. In December of 1991 Texas Ballet Concerto sold out three
performances of The Nutcracker at the 1000 seat McAllister Auditorium
at San Antonio College. The week before, Mayor Nelson Wolff
and the San Antonio City Council proclaimed December 9-16 "Ballet
San Antonio Week" (BA's name was changed for this one season).
Since 1992, Ballet San Antonio has performed at the Lila Cockrell
Theatre to a near capacity crowd. |

Over
the past few years Ballet San Antonio has expanded its Community
Outreach Program which takes ballet to those who do not have the
opportunity to come to the theatre. Performances have been
given at the Ronald McDonald House, the Chandler House, the Guenther
House and many local hospitals and schools. Ballet San
Antonio dancers have also participated in Class Acts, a local group
of artists who perform in San Antonio public schools.
In 1993 and 1994, as their way of contributing to the future of
our city's less fortunate children, Ballet San Antonio donated
the proceeds of one of its Nutcracker performances to the University
of Texas Health Science Center High Risk Infant Program and Children
with AIDS.
2006 marks Ballet San Antonio's twenty-first season.
Ballet San Antonio Academy is the home of Ballet San Antonio.
The school offers classes in ballet, pointe, and jazz for students
of all ages and levels of dance training.
